Patna, October 30:
The Bihar Assembly Election 2025 has turned the idea of “legacy politics” on its head. This time, the sons and daughters of musclemen have outshined the heirs of socialist icons, redefining the political DNA of the state once known as the cradle of socialist thought. In a state that gave India leaders like Jayaprakash Narayan, Karpoori Thakur, and Sharad Yadav, the political heirs of socialist stalwarts are watching from the sidelines  while the next generation of strongmen takes center stage.

The fall of socialist heirs

Names once synonymous with socialist ideals are now missing from candidate lists.
Sharad Yadav’s children — Subhashini and Shantanu — were denied tickets despite expressing strong interest.

BP Mandal’s grandson Nikhil Mandal, who contested from Madhepura last time, has been dropped by JD(U).

Even senior JD(U) leader Vashishtha Narayan Singh’s son, Prashant Sonu, failed to secure a ticket.

The message is loud and clear — heritage without muscle has lost its currency in Bihar’s electoral bazaar.

Meanwhile, the strongmen’s legacy flourishes

Across party lines, the heirs of “bahubalis” — political strongmen with criminal clout — are not just in the fray; they’re dominating ticket lists.

RJD has fielded Osama Shahab, son of late Mohammad Shahabuddin, from Siwan’s Raghunathpur.

Munna Shukla’s daughter, Shivani Shukla, is contesting from Lalganj.

Veena Devi, wife of Mokama’s strongman Surajbhan Singh, is RJD’s choice, while Anant Singh is JD(U)’s pick from the same seat.

Rajballabh Yadav’s wife, Vibha Devi, will contest from Nawada on a JD(U) ticket.

Anand Mohan’s son, Chetan Anand, gets the ticket from Nabinagar.

Parties have no problem embracing power over principle

From RJD to JD(U), BJP to Congress, every party has opened its doors to muscle power. More than half a dozen bahubalis have switched sides this election season — some to stay relevant, others to stay protected.

Even the BJP, once vocal about “clean politics,” has fielded relatives of controversial figures.

Prabhu Nath Singh’s son and brother are in the BJP lineup from Maanjhi and Baniyapur.

Sunil Pandey’s son, Vishal Pandey, will contest again from Tarari, while his brother Hulas Pandey is running on an LJP (Ram Vilas) ticket.

Muscle over movement — Bihar’s shifting ground

This election exposes a hard truth — Bihar’s politics has moved from movements to muscle, from ideology to influence.
Where once socialist ideals were the ticket to power, today, clout, caste, and criminal legacy rule the game.

The state that once echoed with the call for “Samajwad” (socialism) now reverberates with a different slogan —
“Jitni taqat, utni siyasat.” (The stronger you are, the louder your politics.)
