Just days before the first phase of Bihar Assembly elections, political tension gripped the state when JDU candidate and former MLA Anant Kumar Singh was arrested by Patna Police around midnight on November 1. The arrest came in connection with the murder of Jan Suraaj worker Dularchand Yadav, who was killed during a violent clash in Mokama on October 30. Confirming the arrest, Patna SSP Kartikeyan Sharma said that the police were continuously investigating the case and took decisive action late at night.
Moments after the arrest, a short video appeared on Anant Singh’s official Facebook page showing him being taken away by the police. The caption read—“Satyamev Jayate!! I have full faith in the people of Mokama!! Now the people will fight this election!” The post made it clear that Anant Singh is trying to project himself as a victim of political conspiracy while rallying support from his followers.
According to police reports, the October 30 clash broke out between two rival political groups during the campaign. Stones were thrown, shots were fired, and 75-year-old Jan Suraaj worker Dularchand Yadav lost his life. Several others were injured, prompting the administration to impose strict security measures in the area. Patna DM Dr. Thyagarajan S.M. said the situation was now under control, warning that “anyone trying to disrupt the election process will face strict legal action.”
Mokama: The Fortress of Strongmen
For decades, Mokama has been known as the power base of Bihar’s ‘bahubali’ (strongman) politics. Names like Anant Singh, his brother Dilip Singh, and former MP Surajbhan Singh have dominated the region’s political landscape. This time, the contest in Mokama has turned into a high-stakes family feud—JDU’s Anant Singh vs RJD’s Veena Devi, who happens to be Surajbhan Singh’s wife. Both belong to the Bhumihar community, making the battle even more intense.
The first phase of polling in Mokama will be held on November 6, the second on November 11, and vote counting on November 14. As the election draws closer, Anant Singh’s midnight arrest has injected high drama and uncertainty into Bihar’s already heated political arena—where crime, power, and politics continue to walk hand in hand.
