Samastipu: On the 5th anniversary of the Nasha-Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, a mass oath ceremony was held on Tuesday at the Collectorate Auditorium under the chairmanship of District Magistrate Roshan Kushwaha. Officials, employees and citizens took a pledge to stay away from intoxicants while the DM urged youth to spread awareness about the social and health dangers of addiction. Schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres and Jeevika groups across the district also organised oath events where a large number of students and locals participated.

However, the editorial reality tells a different story. Despite official programmes and yearly pledges, the campaign largely remains a routine formality. Senior officers to ground-level staff participate in ceremonial events, but the streets of Samastipur reflect a contrasting truth.
Even today, intoxicants are openly sold across the district—pan masala, gutkha, khaini, tobacco and other banned products are easily available. Bihar may have prohibition on paper, but enforcement is visibly weak. More worrying is the rising involvement of minors, who are falling prey to ganja, synthetic substances and other drugs. Home-delivery liquor networks continue to operate, with even women and underage boys allegedly involved, while the administration stays silent.

If the drug-free mission is to succeed, real action is needed. Strict ground-level enforcement, shop inspections, crackdown on illegal supply chains, and action against those involving minors are essential. Only then will this campaign move from speeches to reality.

Participants ended the programme with a pledge to stay away from addiction. But the real pledge must come from the administration—of seriousness, strictness and visible action. Otherwise, the vows will continue every year, and the drug problem too will continue to spread.
