In a dramatic move, former U.S. President Donald Trump has declared Nigeria an “existential threat to Christianity”, placing it back on America’s list of Countries of Particular Concern (CPC)  nations accused of serious violations of religious freedom.Taking to his Truth Social account, Trump alleged that “thousands of Christians are being slaughtered in Nigeria” and that radical forces are carrying out a genocide against them. When innocent people are being killed just because of their faith, the world cannot stay silent. It’s time for strong action,” Trump wrote. He added that he has requested the House Appropriations Committee and lawmakers Riley Moore and Tom Cole to investigate the situation in Nigeria, calling this “just the beginning.” The move gives the U.S. president the authority to consider diplomatic or economic measures against the West African nation.

Nigeria Denies Accusations

The Nigerian government has rejected Trump’s claims, insisting that religious freedom in the country remains intact and that the government does not tolerate violence against any faith.Notably, Nigeria was first added to the CPC list in 2020, removed in 2023, and now — under Trump’s renewed push — placed back again, amid reports of growing attacks on Christian communities.

Escalating Violence Against Christians

Human rights organizations report that in the past year alone, over 4,000 Christians have been killed and more than 2,000 churches attacked across Nigeria.
The primary culprits are said to be the Boko Haram terrorist group and the Fulani militia, both of which have carried out brutal assaults in rural regions, displacing thousands of families.

What Is a “Country of Particular Concern”?

Under the U.S. International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA), a nation is designated as a “Country of Particular Concern” when it is found to have engaged in or tolerated systematic and egregious violations of religious freedom. This designation allows the U.S. administration to impose economic sanctions, trade restrictions, or diplomatic pressure, depending on the president’s discretion.

What Happens Next?

Following the new designation, the U.S. will prepare a detailed report on Nigeria’s human rights situation. Based on the findings, the Trump administration may consider targeted sanctions or diplomatic measures.Analysts believe the move goes beyond Nigeria — it signals a broader shift in America’s Africa policy, with the Trump administration aiming to position itself as a global protector of Christian communities facing persecution. In summary: Trump has sent a strong message — religious persecution will not be ignored, and Nigeria is now squarely in Washington’s crosshairs.
