Alam Ki Khabar: Donald Trump has warned of a possible strike on Iran's underground Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility near Natanz, raising fresh concerns over escalating US-Iran tensions and the future of Tehran's nuclear program.

New Delhi, July 23 |Fresh tensions have emerged between the United States and Iran after US President Donald Trump issued a strong warning over Iran's underground Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility. The latest remarks have reignited concerns about the future of the Middle East despite recent diplomatic efforts and ceasefire discussions.

Speaking to reporters, Trump reiterated that the United States would not allow Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. He indicated that the American military could target the Pickaxe Mountain complex, describing it as one of Iran's most strategically important nuclear locations. His comments have once again intensified speculation over possible military action.

The Pickaxe Mountain complex is situated nearly 220 kilometres south of Tehran and approximately two kilometres from the Natanz nuclear enrichment facility, which has long been at the centre of international concern over Iran's nuclear programme. Natanz has previously been targeted in sabotage operations and airstrikes, prompting Iran to expand and strengthen underground infrastructure in the surrounding mountainous region.

According to assessments by international security experts, construction at the Pickaxe Mountain site began after significant damage was reported at Natanz in 2020. The underground complex is believed to be built nearly 100 metres beneath the mountain, making it one of the most heavily protected nuclear facilities in Iran.

Satellite imagery analysed by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS) suggests that the facility includes multiple tunnel entrances, reinforced security barriers and newly completed perimeter walls. Analysts believe the site remains under construction and has not yet become fully operational, although work appears to be continuing.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi had earlier stated that Iran had informed the agency of its intention to conduct nuclear-related activities at the underground location. Experts believe the project forms part of Tehran's broader strategy of relocating sensitive nuclear infrastructure deep underground to reduce vulnerability to potential airstrikes.

Security analysts have also noted that tunnel entrances have recently been reinforced, making it increasingly difficult for conventional bunker-buster weapons to penetrate the facility. Military experts say the site's depth presents a significant operational challenge even for advanced American weapons.

Despite Trump's latest warning, defence analysts believe that any direct ground operation inside Iran would remain highly unlikely, as such a move could trigger a wider regional conflict. Previous Pentagon assessments had suggested that earlier attacks on Iranian nuclear sites delayed Tehran's programme by one to two years, although the exact extent of the damage remains uncertain.

Strategic experts say Iran continues to strengthen protective measures around the underground complex while keeping future options open for advanced centrifuge assembly and uranium enrichment activities. The situation remains under close international observation as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to rise.

Editorial

Growing hostility between Washington and Tehran highlights how fragile regional stability remains. Diplomatic engagement continues alongside military warnings, creating uncertainty for global energy markets and international security. Whether the latest rhetoric develops into military action will largely depend on diplomatic negotiations, intelligence assessments and geopolitical calculations in the coming weeks.
