powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan's Kyushu region, prompting a tsunami warning and emergency alerts. Authorities advised residents to stay away from coastal areas while transport services were temporarily suspended.

Tokyo.A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Japan's southern Kyushu region on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami warning and emergency response across several prefectures. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake's epicentre was near Uki City in Kumamoto Prefecture at a depth of around 10 kilometres.

Following the strong tremor, authorities issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas, cautioning residents about waves of up to one metre. People living near the sea were advised to move to safer locations and avoid beaches, ports and coastal zones until further notice.

Emergency earthquake alerts were activated for Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures. Strong shaking was reported across the region, with Kumamoto recording one of the highest intensities on Japan's seismic scale.

Rail services, including several high-speed Shinkansen trains, were temporarily suspended as a precaution while engineers inspected tracks and infrastructure. Kyushu Electric Power confirmed that no abnormalities had been detected at the Sendai and Genkai nuclear power plants after the earthquake.

The quake also disrupted electricity supply, leaving nearly 45,600 households without power in parts of Kumamoto Prefecture. Restoration work began immediately after the incident.

Tremors were reportedly felt in parts of South Korea, including the port city of Busan, where local authorities received numerous calls from residents reporting the shaking. Earlier in the day, China's Qinghai Province also experienced two moderate earthquakes measuring 5.7 and 5.8, though no immediate casualties were reported.

Japan remains one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where several tectonic plates meet. The latest earthquake occurred nearly a decade after the devastating 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, which claimed hundreds of lives and caused extensive damage.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have urged citizens to follow official advisories until the tsunami warning is lifted.

Preparedness Saves Lives During Natural Disasters

Japan's response once again highlights the importance of disaster preparedness. Strict building standards, early warning systems and public awareness have helped the country reduce the impact of major earthquakes over the years. While natural disasters cannot be prevented, timely alerts and disciplined evacuation measures play a crucial role in protecting lives. The latest earthquake serves as another reminder that preparedness remains the strongest defence against nature's unpredictable forces.
