Bishkek, August 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek. The meeting focused on India-Russia relations, economic cooperation and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India's consistent position in favour of peace and said that the international community must move away from a prolonged conflict and work towards a peaceful resolution.

Modi said that India has always supported efforts aimed at establishing peace and would continue to extend its support to every genuine initiative in that direction. Referring to the Ukraine conflict, he stressed that every day spent in war pushes humanity backwards, while every step towards peace creates new hope.

Modi highlights strong India-Russia ties

During his opening remarks, Prime Minister Modi described Putin as a friend and said he was pleased to meet him. He recalled the Russian President's previous visit to India and said the visit had been successful and memorable.

Modi also pointed to the growing economic engagement between the two countries. He said that discussions held between the two sides had helped take bilateral economic relations towards a new level and expand cooperation in several areas.

The Prime Minister expressed satisfaction that teams from both countries were working with commitment to implement the decisions taken during their discussions.

According to Modi, India and Russia have continued to strengthen their partnership and are working together while keeping the interests of both countries at the forefront. He indicated that this approach would remain an important principle for bilateral relations in the future as well.

Ukraine war remains an important issue

The Ukraine conflict emerged as one of the key issues during the interaction between Modi and Putin.

Modi recalled that the two leaders had discussed Ukraine during their previous meetings as well. He said Putin had earlier briefed him in detail about the situation.

India has repeatedly maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are the way forward for resolving international conflicts. In his remarks, Modi once again emphasised that peace should be restored as soon as possible.

He said the world needs to move from a situation of an apparently endless war towards an end to the conflict. According to the Prime Minister, finding a peaceful solution to outstanding issues is not only in the interest of the countries involved but also important for humanity as a whole.

Message of peace from India

Prime Minister Modi linked India's position on the Ukraine conflict with the country's long-standing message of peace.

He said that the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Gautama Buddha carries the message of choosing the path of peace. His remarks underlined India's continued emphasis on dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful settlement of disputes.

Modi also made it clear that India would continue supporting all efforts aimed at bringing peace. The statement assumes significance as the Ukraine conflict continues to remain a major international issue with wider implications for global security and the economy.

Upcoming India visit of Putin discussed

The Prime Minister also referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin's upcoming visit to India.

Modi said India would soon host the BRICS Summit and that Indians and the Indian delegation were looking forward to welcoming the Russian President.

He said Putin's visit would provide another opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations between India and Russia. It would also help deepen dialogue and cooperation among BRICS member countries.

The upcoming visit is therefore expected to provide an important platform for discussions on bilateral cooperation as well as major international and regional developments.

Economic cooperation remains important

India and Russia have maintained close relations across several sectors, including trade, energy, defence and strategic cooperation. The leadership of both countries has repeatedly stressed the importance of expanding economic engagement.

During the meeting, Modi highlighted the progress made in bilateral economic relations and expressed satisfaction with the implementation of decisions taken by the two countries.

The Prime Minister's remarks suggested that India wants to further expand practical cooperation with Russia while simultaneously maintaining its independent position on major international issues.

India maintains focus on diplomacy

The meeting between Modi and Putin comes against the backdrop of continued international efforts to address the Ukraine conflict.

India has maintained that lasting peace can be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy. New Delhi has also continued to engage with both Russia and other international partners while advocating a peaceful resolution.

The Modi-Putin meeting provided an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss these issues directly as well as review the broader trajectory of India-Russia relations.

The talks are also significant ahead of Putin's proposed India visit, which could give the two countries another opportunity to discuss strategic, economic and global issues in greater detail.
