Alam Ki Khabar | Bihar News | Patna News | Samastipur News | Fourteen black bears were euthanized near Bozeman, Montana, after officials found them heavily dependent on human food and unusually comfortable around people.

BOZEMAN, Fourteen black bears have been captured and humanely euthanized by wildlife officials in Montana after they were found on a property north of Bozeman displaying behavior linked to repeated access to human food. Officials said the bears had become extremely food-conditioned and were no longer showing normal fear of people, creating a significant human-safety concern. One cub found at the property was taken to a wildlife facility in Helena for possible placement at an accredited zoo.

What Led to the Action?

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks said its game wardens and wildlife staff responded to a report involving the alleged feeding of wild black bears at a residence north of Bozeman.

Investigators visited the property on September 24 and 25 and found a large number of bears gathering there. According to the wildlife agency, the animals had become heavily accustomed to receiving food around people and were no longer sufficiently afraid of human presence.

Game warden Captain Josh Leonard said the bears had stopped relying on natural food sources and their lack of fear toward people had created a safety risk. The agency described the euthanasia as an unfortunate measure taken because of the circumstances.

The Bears Were Not Simply Passing Through

Wildlife officials said the problem was not merely that bears had entered a residential area. Their concern was the animals' changed behavior.

When wild bears repeatedly obtain food from people, garbage or other sources around homes, they can begin associating human settlements with an easy supply of food. Over time, this can make them increasingly comfortable around people.

Officials said the bears found on the property were showing this type of extreme food conditioning. According to Montana FWP, such behavior can create a situation in which bears repeatedly return to homes or enter areas occupied by people in search of food.

Why Couldn't the Bears Simply Be Relocated?

One of the key questions in the case is why the bears were not moved to another location.

Montana FWP said that once bears become heavily conditioned to human food and lose their natural avoidance of people, relocation or rehabilitation may not solve the underlying behavior. The agency says such animals can continue looking for food around people even after being moved elsewhere.

Zoo placement is another possible option, but wildlife officials said it is available only in limited circumstances and cannot be used for every bear.

As a result, the agency said lethal removal can become a last-resort response when human safety risks cannot be adequately addressed through other measures.

One Cub Was Spared

A total of 15 bears were removed from the property. Fourteen were euthanized, while one cub was taken to the Montana WILD facility in Helena.

Officials are considering whether the cub can eventually be placed in an accredited zoo. Its future has not yet been finalized.

Feeding Bears Is Against Montana Law

Montana law prohibits people from providing supplemental food to game animals, including bears.

Wildlife officials say feeding bears can create exactly the kind of human-wildlife conflict seen in this case. Once bears learn that food is readily available around homes, they may repeatedly return to those locations.

A violation of Montana's wildlife-feeding restrictions can carry legal penalties, including fines and possible imprisonment, according to reporting on the case.

The investigation into how the bears came to be concentrated at the property is still ongoing. Officials have not publicly identified the person or people who may have been responsible for feeding them.

Why Bear-Proof Garbage Bins Are Important

In parts of Montana, residents use bear-resistant garbage containers and other measures designed to prevent bears from accessing human food.

The objective is not simply to keep bears away from garbage. It is also to prevent them from developing a habit of associating homes and residential areas with food.

Wildlife officials advise people to secure garbage, pet food, bird feeders and other potential food attractants. They also encourage residents to report bears attempting to access food around homes so that wildlife authorities can intervene before the behavior becomes established.

A Warning About Human-Wildlife Conflict

The Montana incident highlights a difficult aspect of wildlife management: protecting animals can sometimes require officials to remove animals that have developed dangerous behavior around people.

The state's wildlife agency has emphasized that euthanasia is a last resort. In this case, officials said the bears had become unusually comfortable around humans and had developed a strong dependence on human-associated food.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the bears' presence at the property continues. Meanwhile, wildlife officials are again stressing that people should never deliberately feed wild bears and should keep food sources and garbage secured.
