Alam Ki Khabar | Bihar News | Patna News | Samastipur News | India News: Around 238 Indian prisoners are reportedly held in Bangladesh, including 168 who have completed their sentences but are still awaiting repatriation due to citizenship verification issues.

October 23, 2026 | Alam Ki Khabar: The repatriation of Indian prisoners held in Bangladesh remains delayed due to difficulties in verifying their citizenship and incomplete personal records. According to the available report, around 238 Indian nationals are in Bangladeshi prisons, including 168 who have completed their sentences but have not yet returned to India.

Bangladesh reportedly has at least 407 foreign prisoners from 15 countries. Indians account for the largest group among them. However, an official at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka told The Daily Star that only 25 Indian prisoners who have completed their sentences have so far been identified and confirmed as Indian citizens.

Incomplete Records Complicate Verification

According to the report, Bangladesh has shared a list of around 120 prisoners believed to be Indian nationals with Indian authorities. However, the Indian High Commission has reportedly found that information about most of the individuals on the list is incomplete, making it difficult to establish their citizenship.

The High Commission has sought permission to meet prisoners whose identities could not be verified through the available records. Officials are now awaiting a response from Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Myanmar Nationals Form the Second-Largest Group

After Indian nationals, Myanmar citizens make up the largest group of foreign prisoners in Bangladesh, with 133 people reportedly behind bars. One of them has completed their sentence and is waiting to return home.

The report also mentions six Nigerian prisoners and three each from Pakistan and Malaysia.

Foreign Prisoners Add to Jail Costs

Foreign prisoners are reportedly kept in separate barracks for security reasons, with CCTV cameras used to monitor the areas. Prison officials say that keeping foreign nationals in custody after their sentences have ended contributes to overcrowding and increases government expenditure.

Bangladeshi Nationals Returned from Indian Prisons

Several Bangladeshi nationals have also been repatriated after completing their sentences in India.

According to the information provided, 47 Bangladeshi nationals were sent back through the Petrapole–Benapole crossing on September 11, 2026. Nine others, including three women and two children, were reportedly returned on September 5. Another 50 Bangladeshi nationals were sent home on July 6 after completing their sentences in India.

The return of Indian prisoners from Bangladesh now depends largely on timely citizenship verification, the exchange of complete records and coordination between the authorities of both countries.
