The US economy continues to show signs of resilience, but growing public dissatisfaction over the cost of living is creating a serious political challenge for President Donald Trump. Despite steady economic growth, relatively low unemployment and a strong stock market, many Americans remain concerned about rising prices and their ability to manage everyday expenses.

The situation has drawn comparisons with former President Joe Biden, whose administration struggled to convince voters that a relatively strong economy was benefiting ordinary households. Trump is now facing a similar gap between economic indicators and public perception as the country approaches its midterm elections.

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump promised to bring down prices quickly after taking office. However, delivering that promise has proved more difficult than expected, with household budgets continuing to face pressure from expensive essentials, fuel and other consumer goods.

Economic Growth Fails to Ease Public Concerns

Recent economic indicators suggest that the US economy is not heading towards a major downturn. Economic growth has remained around 2.2 per cent, while unemployment has stayed relatively low at approximately 4.2 per cent.

The stock market has also remained close to record levels. However, these developments have not been enough to reassure consumers who are more concerned about supermarket bills, petrol prices and the cost of maintaining their households.

Trump has defended his economic record by highlighting investment, growth and stock market performance. White House officials have also argued that the administration's policies are helping strengthen the economy and reduce the impact of inflation inherited from the Biden years.

Wages Struggle to Keep Pace With Rising Prices

One of the biggest concerns for American households is the gap between wage growth and inflation. Over the past year, average hourly earnings reportedly increased by around 3 per cent, while consumer prices rose by approximately 3.7 per cent.

This difference means that many workers are finding it harder to maintain their purchasing power, even when their salaries increase.

Political analysts say this is one reason why voters continue to give the Trump administration poor ratings on economic management. For ordinary families, the experience of paying more for daily necessities often matters more than headline figures showing economic growth.

Democratic pollster Celinda Lake has highlighted the difference between how economists and ordinary consumers understand inflation. While economists describe inflation as falling when prices rise more slowly, consumers often expect prices themselves to return to earlier levels.

That gap in understanding has created a major communication challenge for successive US administrations.

Tariffs and Iran Conflict Add to Economic Pressure

Trump's economic difficulties are also linked to policies introduced during his administration. Some economists argue that import tariffs have contributed to higher prices for American consumers.

The tariffs announced in April 2025 under Trump's so-called Liberation Day trade policy are among the measures facing criticism. A study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reportedly found that these tariffs contributed to an increase of around 2.9 per cent in consumer goods prices.

Energy costs have created another problem. The conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran has pushed oil prices higher, increasing petrol costs and putting additional pressure on household budgets.

Economists critical of the administration argue that tariffs and geopolitical tensions have made the inflation challenge more difficult. Trump and his supporters, however, continue to highlight tax cuts, employment growth and efforts to reduce medicine prices as evidence of progress.

White House Looks for Ways to Ease Household Pressure

Facing growing public concern, the Trump administration has started placing greater emphasis on policies aimed at reducing financial pressure on American families.

Trump has called for a cap on credit card interest rates and has also floated a proposal to provide eligible American adults with payments of $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress. These proposals reflect the administration's efforts to address voters' immediate financial concerns.

However, whether such measures will be enough to change public opinion remains uncertain.

Midterm Elections Could Test Trump's Economic Record

The experience of the Biden administration showed that strong economic statistics do not automatically translate into public confidence. Voters often judge governments through their personal experiences, particularly the cost of food, fuel, housing and other essentials.

Trump now faces the same political reality. With the midterm elections approaching, the key question is whether his administration can convince Americans that economic growth is improving their everyday lives.

The outcome could have significant consequences for the Republican Party, as voters' perceptions of the economy may prove just as important as the actual economic data.
