KATHMANDU:Fresh concerns have emerged along the India-Nepal border after allegations from Nepal that Indian personnel entered the Nawalparasi West area and damaged a temporary earthen embankment constructed by local residents. The structure had reportedly been built to reduce the impact of flooding from the Narayani River during the monsoon season.

According to reports from Nepal, the embankment was created by villagers after they claimed permanent flood protection work could not be completed. Local residents alleged that a group of Indian personnel, reportedly in plain clothes and carrying shovels, entered the area and began removing portions of the temporary structure. The incident reportedly led to a heated exchange between residents and the personnel present at the site.
A video circulating on social media is said to show the confrontation, although its authenticity has not been independently verified. Following the incident, Nepal's Armed Police Force reportedly reached the location and intervened to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Residents of the border area claimed they objected because they believed the embankment was protecting their villages from possible flooding caused by the rising waters of the Narayani River. They maintained that they acted to safeguard their homes and agricultural land.
A spokesperson associated with Nepal's border security deployment stated that local people had resorted to building the temporary earthen barrier after permanent flood-control construction was allegedly halted. According to the statement, the temporary embankment was intended only as an emergency measure until a permanent solution could be implemented.
The Chief District Officer of the area confirmed that a dispute had taken place between local residents and Indian personnel over the embankment. He also indicated that officials from both India and Nepal were expected to hold discussions to resolve the matter and prevent further misunderstandings along the border.
So far, there has been no official public response from Indian authorities regarding Nepal's allegations. As a result, the claims made by local residents and Nepali officials remain unverified from the Indian side.
Border-related issues between India and Nepal have surfaced periodically in recent years, particularly during the monsoon season when rivers frequently alter their course and flood-control structures become sensitive points of concern. Experts believe that regular coordination between administrative and security officials from both countries is essential to avoid local disputes from escalating into larger diplomatic issues.
Both countries share a long and traditionally friendly border, with thousands of people crossing daily for trade, employment and family ties. Officials are hopeful that the latest disagreement will be addressed through dialogue and mutual understanding.
